# ADHD Therapy for Children

By the time most families call, the child already has a reputation. Undoing that is part of the work.

## When Behavior Is Being Misread

A child with ADHD is often described in words that belong to character rather than capacity: defiant, disrespectful, lazy, attention-seeking, doesn't care. Very few of those are accurate. A brain that cannot hold three-step instructions, cannot wait its turn without physical effort, and loses the thread halfway across the room is not a brain choosing to be difficult.

Children hear those descriptions. By eight or nine, many of them have decided the words are true, and that belief does more damage over time than the ADHD does.

So we work on two things at once: what actually helps day to day, and repairing what the child now believes about themselves.

## What Sessions Look Like

Sessions are active. Games, movement, drawing, building, talking while doing something else with our hands. Sitting still and making eye contact is not a requirement for therapy here, which is often the first surprise.

With younger children the work is largely play-based. We practice the hard moments in miniature: waiting, losing a game, being interrupted, being told no, switching from something fun to something boring. We name feelings as they show up in the room instead of asking a child to report on last Tuesday.

## Parent Coaching Alongside

Parent sessions run alongside your child's, and for many families they are the engine of the whole thing. We look at the flashpoints, morning, homework, screens, dinner, bedtime, and rebuild them so they need less of your child's weakest skills and more of their strongest.

That usually means fewer instructions and clearer ones, more warning before transitions, visible time, chunked tasks, and consequences that arrive close enough to the moment to mean anything. It also means deciding together which battles are actually worth fighting this month. Not everything has to be fixed this year.

I have been a foster parent and a child protection social worker. I am not going to be shocked by the thing you did at 7:40 this morning, and I am not keeping score of your parenting.

## School, Homework and Meetings

Homework deserves its own paragraph, because it is where more families come apart than anywhere else. We look at how long it should reasonably take, what part your child can do alone, where you stop, and how to talk with a teacher about a workload that is producing two hours of tears for twenty minutes of work.

As a former school counselor, I can help you prepare for school meetings: what to ask for, what to put in writing, and how to describe your child in a way that gets support rather than a label. Direct consultation with a school is available as a separate service.

## Scope

I do not diagnose ADHD and I do not provide assessment, testing or evaluation. If you want a formal diagnosis or are exploring medication, that is a conversation for an evaluating or prescribing provider, and therapy can run alongside it.

Sessions happen in Eugene or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon, and they begin with a free 30-minute call with you.

What Families Bring

- Behavior at school being read as defiance
- Homework battles and morning routines
- Frustration tolerance and big feelings
- Self-esteem after years of correction
- Parent coaching and household rhythm
- Preparing for school support meetings

Next Step

## Start With a Free 30-Minute Call

A short conversation so I can hear what is going on and we can decide together whether this is the right room for it.
