# Clear Numbers, No Surprises

Ubuntu Counseling is private pay only. I do not bill insurance, and I provide superbills you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.

Money is one of the things people are most reluctant to ask about and most anxious not to get wrong. So here is all of it in one place, including the parts most practices leave you to guess at.

## Why I Am Private Pay

When an insurer pays for therapy, the insurer becomes a party to it. To bill a plan I would have to give you a mental health diagnosis, whether or not one fits and whether or not you want one on your record. That diagnosis goes into a file that is not mine and not yours.

Paying privately means no diagnosis is required for billing. It means no session cap set by a plan, so we stop when the work is done rather than when an allowance runs out. It means no treatment plan filed with a third party for review, and no reviewer deciding whether what we are doing counts as medically necessary. And it means what happens in the room stays between you and me, inside the ordinary legal limits of confidentiality that I will go over with you at the start.

It also means the fee comes out of your pocket, and I am not going to pretend that is nothing. It is the trade. Some people decide the reimbursement is worth the paperwork and the diagnosis, and go to someone in network, and that is a completely reasonable decision. I would rather you make it knowingly.

## How a Superbill Actually Works

A superbill is an itemized receipt for sessions you have already paid for. It carries the dates, the service codes, the fee, my license information, and the diagnosis code your insurer requires in order to consider the claim. Step by step it goes like this. You pay me at the time of the session. I give you a superbill, usually monthly. You submit it to your insurer, either through their member portal or by mail on their out-of-network claim form. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, and if your deductible is met, the insurer may reimburse part of the fee directly to you.

Whether a plan reimburses, and how much, is between you and your insurer. I cannot promise an outcome there, and you should not budget as though reimbursement is certain. Before you count on it, call the number on the back of your card and ask these things plainly: do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits, what is my out-of-network deductible and how much of it have I met, what percentage of the allowed amount do you reimburse after that, what is the allowed amount for CPT code 90837 in my area, is there a session limit, and do I need prior authorization. Write down who you spoke to and the date. Ask them to send it in writing if they will.

## Reduced Fees, and How to Ask

I hold a limited number of reduced-fee spots, starting from $130. They are limited because the number of them is what makes the rest of the practice able to carry them, so sometimes they are all taken and I will tell you that straight rather than leave you hoping.

Asking is not awkward and you do not need to prove anything. On the free call you can simply say the full fee does not work for me, and I will tell you what is available. You will not be asked for bank statements or a means test, and asking will not change how I work with you or move you down a list. If a reduced fee still does not get there, say so, and I will help you look at other options in the area rather than let cost quietly end the conversation.

## Paying, and When

Payment is due at the time of the session, so nothing accumulates into a bill you have to think about later. I take card, and other arrangements can be worked out if that is what you need. If your circumstances change partway through our work, tell me. That is a conversation, not an ending.

Consultation and letters are $180. That covers work outside of session time, such as writing a letter you have asked for or consulting with another provider on your behalf, and I will always tell you the cost before I do it, never afterward.

Policies

## Scheduling and Cancellation

24-hour cancellation policy. The full fee applies inside 24 hours.

The reason is simple. Your hour is held for you and nobody else can use it, so inside 24 hours the time is gone whether you are in it or not. If something genuinely unavoidable happens, tell me and we will talk about it. I am not looking for reasons to charge you.

Weekend appointments available. Sessions happen in person at 132 E Broadway Suite 303, Eugene, OR 97401, or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon.

Booking link coming soon. Call or use the contact form in the meantime.

## Not Sure Yet?

The 30-minute call is free and there is no obligation attached to it. Cost is a fine thing to spend that call on.
